Claude Desktop is Anthropic's desktop application for the Claude assistant on macOS and Windows, and one of the first clients to support connecting to MCP servers.
What Claude Desktop does
Claude Desktop offers the same conversations as Claude on the web, plus features that need a local app. The main one for builders is MCP support:
- Local servers over stdio, configured in a JSON file (
claude_desktop_config.json) or installed as desktop extensions. - Remote servers added as connectors, depending on your plan.
When servers are connected, Claude sees their tools and can call them during a chat. By default it asks your permission before running a tool, and you can choose to allow some tools without asking each time.
An example
You add a publishing MCP server to Claude Desktop. In a chat you say, "Draft a LinkedIn post and a Bluesky thread about today's release notes," and paste the notes. Claude calls the drafting tool twice, then shows you what it submitted.
Why it matters for AI-agent publishing
Claude Desktop turns a writing chat into an agent that acts. That is useful, and it means the server must enforce limits, since a user can approve tool calls quickly without reading every argument.
SocialHandoff works with Claude Desktop over stdio with npx socialhandoff-mcp. Tools cover planning, drafting, scheduling, previews, and insights, and UI cards for the calendar, approvals, and analytics render as MCP Apps resources in supporting clients. Drafts still wait for your approval. See Claude Desktop setup.
