Where Buffer is strong
- Supports a wide set of networks, including Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Threads, Pinterest, Bluesky and Mastodon.
- A free plan for up to 3 channels, and simple per-channel pricing on paid plans.
- An official remote MCP server and public API, available on every plan including Free.
- Mature, easy-to-learn interface with an AI Assistant on all plans.
Where teams outgrow it
- Draft and approval roles are part of the Team plan; an agent is not held to a draft-only tier by default.
- API keys are counted per plan, not issued per agent with network and permission scopes.
- Closed source, with no self-hosted option.
Why people look for a Buffer alternative
Buffer is simple and fairly priced, so most people who leave it are not unhappy with the queue. The reasons tend to be narrower:
- Per-channel pricing adds up. Paid plans are billed per channel, so each new account raises the bill. Teams with many accounts end up comparing flat-rate tools.
- Agents need a gate, not just an API. Buffer's MCP server lets an assistant schedule and edit posts. That is useful, but it means you have to decide how far to trust the assistant with your live queue.
- No self-hosting. Some teams want their tokens and drafts on their own servers for compliance or cost reasons.
When to stay with Buffer
Stay if you publish to YouTube or Pinterest, which SocialHandoff does not support yet. SocialHandoff now publishes to Instagram, Facebook Pages and TikTok, but Buffer's connections there are long established, while Meta and TikTok require app review before SocialHandoff can post beyond test accounts, and TikTok posts stay private until TikTok audits the app. Stay if you want a free plan for a few channels, or if your team writes posts by hand and just needs a reliable queue. Buffer is mature, and its analytics cover more networks than ours.
How SocialHandoff differs
SocialHandoff sits between AI agents and your social accounts. An agent drafts, a person approves, then it publishes.
- One key per agent, scoped by network and by permission (draft, schedule, analytics). An agent can never approve its own draft.
- A trust ladder. New agents are draft-only. After clean approvals you can promote one to auto-publish on specific networks, and a guardrail failure demotes it immediately.
- Guardrails and a kill switch. Banned topics, per-network length, missing alt text and daily limits are checked before anything reaches the approval inbox. One switch pauses every agent.
- An audit log that is append-only and hash-chained, so you can show who approved what.
- Open source under AGPL-3.0, self-hostable with Docker Compose, with a hosted plan if you prefer.
We cover X, LinkedIn, Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads, Instagram (professional accounts), Facebook Pages and TikTok. See how approvals work and agent keys and permissions.
Questions to ask before switching
Count how many of your posts start as agent output today, and how many will next quarter. If the answer is most of them, the approval step matters more than the queue. Check which networks carry your results: if YouTube or Pinterest bring most of your reach, keep Buffer for them. If Instagram or TikTok do, check that you have a professional Instagram account and can wait for TikTok's audit. Finally, decide where you want your tokens stored. Buffer holds them in its cloud; SocialHandoff can run on your own server with tokens encrypted at rest using AES-256-GCM.
