Where Publer is strong
- Supports many networks, including X, LinkedIn, Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads, Instagram, TikTok, Telegram and WordPress.
- Low entry price that scales with accounts and members, plus a free plan.
- Official MCP server with scoped API keys (Posts, Media, Analytics) on Business and Enterprise.
- Thread composer for X, Threads, Mastodon and Bluesky.
Where teams outgrow it
- MCP access is limited to Business and Enterprise plans.
- No trust ladder that keeps a new agent draft-only until it earns auto-publish.
- Closed source with no self-hosted option.
Why people look for a Publer alternative
Publer is a good value scheduler, so the reasons to compare are usually specific:
- MCP is on higher plans. Publer's official MCP server is available on Business and Enterprise, not on Professional.
- Keys scope data, not agents. Publer's API keys can be limited to Posts, Media or Analytics. Teams running several agents often want one key per agent, limited to specific networks too.
- No self-hosting. Some teams need their tokens and drafts on their own servers.
When to stay with Publer
Stay with Publer if you need Pinterest, YouTube, Telegram or WordPress; SocialHandoff does not publish there yet. SocialHandoff now covers Instagram, Facebook Pages and TikTok, though Instagram needs a professional account and TikTok posts stay private until TikTok audits the app. Publer's free plan, low per-account pricing and analytics on Business are strong reasons to keep it for mixed visual and text publishing.
How SocialHandoff differs
SocialHandoff is narrower and deeper on one job: letting agents post safely.
- Per-agent keys. Each agent gets a key scoped to networks and to draft, schedule or analytics.
- Required approval. New agents are draft-only. You approve from a desktop inbox, a phone swipe stack or the PWA.
- Trust ladder. Promote a proven agent to auto-publish on specific networks; a guardrail failure demotes it immediately.
- Guardrails check banned topics, per-network length, alt text and daily limits.
- Audit log that is append-only and hash-chained.
- MCP on every plan, and when self-hosted.
Both tools cover X, LinkedIn, Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. See Mastodon scheduling and LinkedIn scheduling.
Questions to ask before switching
Check which Publer plan you are on. If you are on Professional and want agent access, compare the cost of moving up to Business against a tool that includes MCP on every plan. Then list the networks you use: if the answer includes Pinterest, Telegram or WordPress, keep Publer for those. Finally, think about how many agents you will run. One assistant with one key is manageable anywhere; five agents with different jobs are easier to control with one scoped key each.
