Open source under AGPL-3.0
The core of SocialHandoff is open source under the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3. You can read it, run it, change it, and self-host it for free, with no channel or agent limits. The code is at https://github.com/socialhandoff/socialhandoff.
Why AGPL
A tool that holds the keys to your social accounts should be one you can inspect. AGPL-3.0 keeps it that way: if someone runs a modified version as a network service, they must share their changes with its users. That protects you and keeps improvements in the open.
What is in the open core
Everything that decides what gets posted, and when, is in the AGPL tree:
- The scheduler and publishing pipeline
- Connectors for X, LinkedIn, Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads, Instagram, Facebook Pages, and TikTok
- The approval inbox, phone swipe stack, and installable app
- Agent keys, scopes, the trust ladder, and policy in
.socialhandoff/policy.json - Guardrails and the kill switch
- The hash-chained audit log and its verify endpoint
- Brand memory and bring-your-own-model rewrites
- The MCP server, REST API, OpenAPI spec, TypeScript SDK, and CLI
- GitHub release triggers and outbound webhooks
- Postiz import and the Postiz-compatible API slice
We will not move scheduling, connectors, guardrails, or approvals out of the open core to push you toward the hosted plans.
What is not in the open core
A small ee/ directory is not covered by the AGPL grant. It holds pieces that only make sense for the hosted service:
- Billing, plan limits, and hosted workspace provisioning
- Verified first-party apps for networks that require us to hold the platform app
- Opt-in, aggregated benchmarks across hosted customers
The core runs without that directory. If it is empty or removed, the product works the same.
