How to do it
- Check your plan OpenAI offers developer mode on the web for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education accounts. On workspace plans an admin may need to allow it.
- Mint an agent key In https://app.socialhandoff.com, open Connections, create an agent called ChatGPT, and grant draft only. The new-key dialog shows the ChatGPT connector values.
- Turn on developer mode In ChatGPT settings, find the developer mode toggle (OpenAI has moved it between the Connectors and security sections) and turn it on.
- Create the connector Add a new developer-mode app or connector, enter the MCP URL below, and set authentication so the agent key is sent as a bearer token.
- Use it in a chat Pick the connector from the developer mode tools in the composer, then ask for a draft. Confirm each write action ChatGPT asks about.
{
"name": "SocialHandoff",
"url": "https://app.socialhandoff.com/mcp",
"transport": "streamable HTTP",
"authorization": "Bearer YOUR_AGENT_KEY"
} What ChatGPT does with the connector
Once the connector is on, ChatGPT sees the SocialHandoff tools as actions it can call. Typical calls are draft_post to create a pending post, plan_week to lay out a week, preview_posts to show per-network checks, and get_brand_memory to pick up your voice rules first. Developer mode asks you to confirm write actions, so you will see a prompt before each draft is created. That is a second check on top of the approval inbox, not a replacement for it.
Authentication, honestly
The SocialHandoff endpoint authenticates each request with an agent key sent as Authorization: Bearer. It does not run an OAuth server. OpenAI's current developer-mode documentation lists OAuth, no authentication, and mixed authentication for connectors. If your ChatGPT workspace offers no way to send a static bearer token, ChatGPT cannot call the tools and every call returns 401. In that case use a client that supports headers, such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, or the OpenAI Agents SDK, which reaches the same tools from code.
Never switch the connector to no authentication by putting the key in a public proxy. Anyone with the URL would act as that agent.
Prompts to try
- "Use the social connector. Read my brand memory, then draft a LinkedIn post about our hiring update. Do not schedule it."
- "Here are my meeting notes. Plan next week with 2 posts per network, and show me the calendar."
- "Preview my pending X drafts and flag any that go over 280 weighted characters."
ChatGPT is strong at reshaping a long paste into several short variants. Ask for 3 options and approve the one you like in the inbox; reject the others with a reason so the pattern shows up in insights.
Permissions
Give the ChatGPT key draft only, and limit networks to the ones you actually use from chat. If a teammate also uses ChatGPT, mint them a separate key; the audit log then shows which person's session drafted what.
Troubleshooting
- Connector saves but no tools list: the URL must end in
/mcp. - 401 on every call: the bearer token is not reaching the server. See the authentication note above.
- Developer mode toggle missing: your plan or workspace admin setting does not allow it.
- Draft rejected with 422: a guardrail rule matched; the message names it.
