SocialHandoff vs Buffer: which fits an agent-driven workflow?

Both tools can take posts from an AI assistant over MCP. They differ in what happens between the draft and the publish button, and in which networks they reach.

Verdict. Pick Buffer if you need YouTube or Pinterest, want Instagram and TikTok without waiting on app review, want a free plan, or write most posts yourself. Pick SocialHandoff if AI agents draft your posts and you want every draft held for human approval, with scoped keys per agent and an audit trail.

Agent access

Buffer's MCP server lets an assistant read channels, browse the queue, schedule posts and pull analytics. SocialHandoff exposes tools such as draft_post, schedule_post and preview_posts, but approve_post works only with owner keys. The design goal is that no agent can push content live on its own until you promote it.

Approval and safety

Buffer's Team plan lets you manage who can draft and who can approve. SocialHandoff makes approval the default path for agents and adds guardrails (banned topics, length per network, missing alt text, daily limits), a kill switch and a hash-chained audit log.

Networks and analytics

Buffer still leads here. It supports YouTube, Pinterest and more alongside Instagram, TikTok and Facebook, with analytics across them. SocialHandoff now covers Instagram (professional accounts), Facebook Pages and TikTok too, but not YouTube or Pinterest, and it reports per-post metrics where the network returns them.

Pricing arithmetic

Buffer's published Essentials price is $5 per channel per month. Five channels come to $25/month, or $50/month on the Team plan at $10 per channel. SocialHandoff Starter is $19/month for 5 channels and 2 agents, and self-hosting is free. This compares cost only, not scope: Buffer covers more networks and includes a free tier.

Migration notes

There is no direct Buffer importer. Connect your accounts in SocialHandoff, then point your agent at the MCP server. Some teams keep Buffer for YouTube and Pinterest and route agent drafts for every other network through SocialHandoff. Start with getting started.

Who should pick which

A solo creator posting to Pinterest, YouTube and LinkedIn by hand will likely be happier with Buffer's free plan. A developer-tools company whose release bot and marketing agent both draft for X, Bluesky and Mastodon will get more from SocialHandoff's scoped keys and approval inbox. Teams in between can run both, since the tools do not conflict.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Buffer and SocialHandoff together?
Yes. A common split is Buffer for YouTube and Pinterest, and SocialHandoff for agent-drafted posts on X, LinkedIn, Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads, Instagram, Facebook Pages and TikTok.
Does SocialHandoff import my Buffer queue?
No. SocialHandoff imports from Postiz only. For Buffer you reconnect your accounts and recreate any scheduled posts.
Which has better analytics?
Buffer, across more networks. SocialHandoff shows per-post metrics where the network returns them and labels best-time suggestions as heuristics.
