How agents connect
Hootsuite runs remote MCP servers that let assistants publish, schedule, read the inbox and pull analytics. SocialHandoff offers an MCP server over stdio (npx socialhandoff-mcp) and streamable HTTP, a REST API with OpenAPI, a TypeScript SDK and a CLI. Both work with Claude; SocialHandoff also documents Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Cline and Gemini CLI setups.
What stops a bad post
On Hootsuite, content review and approval are available on Advanced and Enterprise. On SocialHandoff, every new agent is draft-only, so each post needs a person to approve it. Guardrails check banned topics, length, alt text and daily limits first. A kill switch holds all queued posts, and the audit log is hash-chained and verifiable.
Reach and reporting
Hootsuite leads. It publishes to Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube and others, and adds listening and reporting. SocialHandoff publishes to X, LinkedIn, Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads, Instagram (professional accounts), Facebook Pages and TikTok, but not YouTube, and reports per-post metrics. Meta and TikTok require app review before SocialHandoff can post beyond test accounts, and TikTok posts stay private until TikTok audits the app.
Ownership
Hootsuite is hosted and closed source. SocialHandoff is AGPL-3.0 and can run on your own servers.
Cost arithmetic
Hootsuite lists Standard at $99 per user per month billed annually. Two people cost $198/month; three cost $297/month. SocialHandoff Starter is $19/month for 5 channels and 2 agents, not priced per user, and self-hosting is free. This compares price, not scope: Hootsuite includes an inbox, listening and many more networks.
Moving over
There is no Hootsuite importer. Connect your accounts in SocialHandoff, give each agent its own key, and set your approval rules in .socialhandoff/policy.json. Many teams keep Hootsuite for inbox and listening and route agent drafts through SocialHandoff. See connect an agent with MCP.
Who should pick which
A social team of ten handling customer messages across Facebook and Instagram should stay on Hootsuite. A three-person startup whose AI agent drafts launch posts and changelog threads for X and LinkedIn will find SocialHandoff closer to what it needs, at a price that does not scale with headcount. An enterprise already on Hootsuite can add SocialHandoff for agent-drafted posts without changing its inbox or listening setup, and keep one audit trail for everything agents publish.
