Feature comparison
Publishing and networks
Sprout publishes to the major networks, including Bluesky, but not Mastodon. SocialHandoff publishes to X, LinkedIn, Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads, Instagram (professional accounts), Facebook Pages and TikTok, but not YouTube. Meta and TikTok require app review before SocialHandoff can post beyond test accounts, and TikTok posts stay private until TikTok audits the app. For Instagram and TikTok reporting, Sprout wins.
AI and agents
Sprout includes its Trellis AI agent and AI Assist features inside the product. SocialHandoff works the other way: your own agents, running in Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, n8n or a script, connect over MCP or REST. Each gets a key scoped to networks and permissions, and approve_post is reserved for owners.
Approval
Sprout supports approval workflows on higher tiers. SocialHandoff requires approval for every draft from a new agent. You can then promote an agent per network after clean approvals, and demotion is automatic if a guardrail fails.
Reporting
Sprout's reports are a core strength and go well beyond what SocialHandoff offers.
Hosting and source
Sprout is hosted and closed. SocialHandoff is AGPL-3.0, self-hostable, with tokens encrypted with AES-256-GCM at rest and API keys stored as SHA-256 hashes.
Cost arithmetic
Sprout's published Essentials plan is $79 per seat per month billed annually ($99 monthly). Two seats cost $158/month; four cost $316/month. SocialHandoff Starter is $19/month for 5 channels and 2 agents, and self-hosting costs nothing in license fees. This is a cost comparison only: Sprout includes reporting, inbox and networks SocialHandoff does not.
Migration notes
There is no importer from Sprout. Reconnect your accounts, create one key per agent and put your rules in .socialhandoff/policy.json. Some teams keep Sprout for reporting and use SocialHandoff for agent publishing. Start with getting started.
Who should pick which
A retail brand with a customer care team answering messages across Instagram, Facebook and X should stay with Sprout. A B2B software company whose AI agents draft LinkedIn posts and X threads from product updates, reviewed by one or two people, will find SocialHandoff closer to its needs. Larger organizations can use both, with Sprout for reporting and care and SocialHandoff as the gate for anything an agent writes.
