Styled letters are Unicode symbols. Screen readers may read them letter by letter and search may not match them, so use them for a few words, not whole posts.
How to do it
- Type the words to style Keep it short: a heading, a label, or a single phrase.
- Pick bold, italic, or bold italic The output updates as you type.
- Copy the styled text Paste it into your LinkedIn draft where you want the emphasis.
- Read the post aloud to check it If the styled words carry meaning, repeat that meaning in plain text nearby.
How LinkedIn bold text works
LinkedIn does not support formatting in posts. Generators work around that by swapping each letter for a different Unicode character from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block. The bold "A" you paste is not an "A" in bold. It is a separate character, U+1D400 MATHEMATICAL BOLD CAPITAL A, that happens to look like one.
| Style | Letters | Digits | Accented letters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bold | Yes | Yes | No |
| Italic | Yes | No | No |
| Bold italic | Yes | No | No |
Letters with accents and non-Latin scripts have no styled version, so they stay plain.
The accessibility cost
Screen readers handle these characters badly. Depending on the reader, a bold word may be skipped, read letter by letter, or announced as "mathematical bold capital H, mathematical bold small E" and so on. For someone using a screen reader, a bold sentence can become noise.
If you use styled text:
- Style a few words, never a whole sentence or post.
- Do not put the only copy of key information in styled text.
- Never style names, links, or hashtags.
The search cost
LinkedIn search, hashtags, and most outside search engines index the underlying characters. A bold ๐ฅ๐๐ฎ๐ง๐๐ก does not match a search for "launch", and a styled hashtag is not a working hashtag.
The length cost
Each styled character sits outside the basic range of Unicode and is stored as two UTF-16 units. Some counters, and some tools that post through the LinkedIn API, count it as 2 characters against the 3,000 limit. Check the post in the LinkedIn character counter.
Better ways to add emphasis
Line breaks, short paragraphs, and a strong first sentence do more than bold letters. Preview the result in the LinkedIn post preview. If an agent drafts your LinkedIn posts in SocialHandoff, your brand memory can include a voice rule such as "no Unicode bold", and you edit anything else in the approval inbox.
