A social media scheduler is software that stores posts, queues them for specific times, and publishes them to connected social accounts through each network's API.
What a scheduler does
A scheduler holds OAuth connections to your accounts and a queue of posts. At the set time, it calls each network's API to publish.
Core features in most schedulers:
- Account connections for several networks.
- A queue or content calendar.
- Per-network formatting, media upload, and alt text.
- Threads where the network supports them.
- Retries when a network is down.
- Basic analytics.
An example
You write five posts on Monday and set them for 9:00 each weekday. The scheduler publishes each one on time while you work on something else.
What changes when AI agents write
Most schedulers were designed for a person typing into a composer. When an AI agent is the author, the scheduler also needs to answer: which agent wrote this, what may it do, and who approved it?
SocialHandoff is a scheduler built for that case. Agents connect over MCP or the REST API with their own keys. Drafts wait in an approval inbox. It publishes to X, LinkedIn, Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads, Instagram, Facebook Pages, and TikTok, and handles threads, images with alt text, retries, and duplicate protection. It does not yet support YouTube, Pinterest, or Google Business Profile. Compare options in best free social media schedulers.
