Approvals & safety

The trust ladder for agent autonomy

A new agent can only draft. After enough clean approvals, you can let it publish on its own on networks you choose. One guardrail failure puts it back.

How to do it

  1. Let the agent draft Every new agent starts at draft. You approve each post.
  2. Watch its record The Agents page shows approvals, edits, and rejections per agent.
  3. Promote by hand When you trust it, set the agent to auto on the networks you choose. Other networks still need approval.
  4. Or promote by policy Set autoPromote to true in .socialhandoff/policy.json with thresholds, then run pnpm socialhandoff policy apply.
  5. Let demotion work If a draft fails a guardrail, the agent drops back to draft immediately. Promote it again when you are ready.

The rungs

LevelBehavior
DraftEvery post waits for a person
ApprovalSame as draft, with the agent eligible for promotion
AutoPublishes on the listed networks without review

Policy thresholds

The trust section of .socialhandoff/policy.json controls automatic promotion:

{
  "trust": {
    "promoteAfter": 5,
    "minVoiceScore": 80,
    "maxEditedFraction": 0.2,
    "autoPromote": false,
    "autoNetworks": ["bluesky"]
  }
}
  • promoteAfter: clean approvals required.
  • minVoiceScore: the lowest voice score allowed on those approvals. The score is a heuristic.
  • maxEditedFraction: how much of a post you may edit before it stops counting as clean.
  • autoNetworks: the only networks auto-publish applies to.
  • autoPromote: off by default, so promotion stays a human action until you turn it on.

Applying the policy needs the owner key and is recorded in the audit log.

Safety still applies at the top

An auto agent still hits every guardrail, the daily limit, and the kill switch. Auto means no review, not no rules. Read guardrails and the trust ladder glossary entry.

Frequently asked questions

Is auto-publish on by default?
No. autoPromote defaults to false, and every agent starts at draft. You must promote an agent by hand or turn on automatic promotion.
Can an agent auto-publish on one network but not another?
Yes. Auto applies only to the networks you list, and everything else still goes through the inbox.
What demotes an agent?
Any guardrail failure on one of its drafts demotes it to draft immediately.
