Prompt
Workflow: on release published, run socialhandoff-announce-action. Release rule targets threads with approval required. Reviewer rewrites the technical notes into customer language in the inbox before approving. How to do it
- Connect Threads and add a release rule In https://app.socialhandoff.com, connect Threads, then add a GitHub trigger in Connections with a release rule that targets Threads. Copy the trigger id and signing secret.
- Store the secrets Add your instance URL, the trigger id, and the signing secret as repository secrets.
- Add the workflow Create a workflow on: release with types [published] that runs socialhandoff-announce-action. The action signs the payload with HMAC-SHA256 and sends tag, name, notes, and URL.
- Approve the draft Publish a release. A Threads draft appears in the inbox with a citation back to the release, and publishes only after you approve it.
Example draft
Version 3.4 of our desktop app is out. Search is faster in large workspaces, and you can now pin up to 10 notes to the top of the sidebar. Update from the app menu, or download it fresh from our site.
Gotchas
- Keep each Threads post within 500 characters, and remember that Threads counts emoji by their UTF-8 bytes, so a few emoji use more of the limit than they appear to. The per-network length guardrail flags longer drafts before they reach the inbox.
- A draft too long for one post can go out as a reply-chain thread, with each part published as a reply to the one before. Every part has its own 500-character limit, and a carousel of 2 to 20 images or videos can lead the chain.
- Threads allows 250 posts per account in any 24 hours. The quota is checked before each publish, so a post that would go over it is stopped before it is sent rather than failing at the network.
- The action sends the release, not a finished post. Threads as a target and the approval rule live on the release rule in Connections, not in the workflow file.
- Character limit: 500 characters per post. Emoji count as their UTF-8 bytes, so an emoji can use up to 4 characters of the limit.
- Links: Up to 5 links per post. Threads generates a preview for the first one.
- Carousels: 2 to 20 images or videos in one carousel post.
- Image files: JPEG or PNG, up to 8 MB. Threads fetches each file from a URL at publish time.
Frequently asked questions
Does the action need an agent key?
No. It uses the trigger id and a signing secret, and the request is verified with HMAC-SHA256. The draft is attributed to the release in the audit log.
Do release drafts work for Threads?
Yes, once your Threads account is connected and Threads is selected on the release rule. Long release notes can become a reply-chain thread, and the draft waits for approval like any other network.
What happens if a Threads publish fails?
The post is marked failed with the error, a post.failed webhook fires if you registered one, and you can fix and retry from the inbox.
