A Mixpost alternative for self-hosters running AI agents

Mixpost and SocialHandoff are both self-hosted. Mixpost is a general scheduler with a one-time license. SocialHandoff is an approval layer built around AI agents, open source in full under AGPL-3.0.

Where Mixpost is strong

  • Self-hosted with a one-time license, and a free open source Lite edition under the MIT license.
  • Unlimited accounts and team members on paid editions.
  • Pro and Enterprise add approval workflows, an AI assistant, API access, MCP, and multi-tenant workspaces.
  • Broad networks on Pro, including Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, Bluesky, Mastodon, and Pixelfed.

Where teams outgrow it

  • The free Lite edition supports only Facebook Pages, X, and Mastodon, without approvals, API, or MCP.
  • Pro and Enterprise are commercial licenses with 1 year of updates included; there is no hosted plan on its pricing page.

Why self-hosters compare Mixpost and SocialHandoff

Mixpost is one of the best-known self-hosted schedulers. Lite is free and MIT licensed; Pro and Enterprise add many networks, approvals, an AI assistant, API access, and MCP for a one-time fee. People looking at alternatives often say:

  • Lite is not enough, and Pro is a license purchase. Lite covers Facebook Pages, X, and Mastodon. LinkedIn and Bluesky, approvals, and MCP are Pro features.
  • Agents need their own rules. When agents publish, teams want each agent to start draft-only, earn trust, and lose it on a mistake.
  • Audits need proof. A tamper-evident log of who approved what is a requirement in some organizations.

When Mixpost is the better option

Choose Mixpost if you need YouTube, Pinterest, Google Business, or Pixelfed. SocialHandoff does not support those. Choose it if you want a one-time purchase instead of a subscription and a mature scheduler for human teams. Mixpost Enterprise also includes subscription management for reselling, which SocialHandoff does not offer.

How SocialHandoff differs

The whole codebase is open source under AGPL-3.0, and the self-hosted edition has no feature limits. What it adds for agent workflows:

  • Per-agent keys scoped by network and permission. An agent can never approve its own draft.
  • Trust ladder. Draft-only by default; promote by hand or by policy in .socialhandoff/policy.json; automatic demotion on any guardrail failure. See the trust ladder guide.
  • Guardrails, kill switch, and undo for when an agent gets something wrong.
  • Hash-chained audit log you can verify with one API call.
  • Release triggers. A GitHub release becomes a draft through the socialhandoff-announce-action action.

Deploy with Docker Compose or an all-in-one image. Tokens are encrypted with AES-256-GCM at rest, API keys are stored as hashes, and the container runs as non-root. See security and self-hosting.

Choosing between them

If your posts are written by people and you need many networks, Mixpost is the simpler fit. If they are written by agents, ask whether you need to prove who approved each post and to limit what each agent can do. If yes, SocialHandoff was built for exactly that.

Both run on a modest server, so testing each for a week costs little. Keep your existing scheduler running until the new one has published cleanly for a full cycle.

Other Mixpost alternatives

  • Postiz, another open source scheduler; SocialHandoff can import from it.
  • Buffer if you would rather not host anything.
  • Zoho Social for a hosted tool with Mastodon and Bluesky.
  • Fedica for fediverse coverage in the cloud.
