MCP (streamable HTTP)

Use Cline to draft social posts that wait for your approval

Cline is an open source coding agent that asks before it acts. Add SocialHandoff as a remote MCP server and Cline can draft posts from your project, with two gates: Cline's tool approval and the SocialHandoff inbox.

How to do it

  1. Create an agent key In https://app.socialhandoff.com, open Connections and add an agent called Cline. Grant draft on the networks you want.
  2. Open Cline's MCP settings In the Cline panel, click the MCP Servers icon, go to the installed or remote servers tab, and choose Configure MCP Servers. This opens cline_mcp_settings.json.
  3. Add the server with the right type Paste the entry below. The type must be streamableHttp, written in camelCase. Leaving it out makes Cline fall back to SSE.
  4. Leave autoApprove empty Keep autoApprove as an empty list at first so Cline asks before each tool call. Add read-only tools later if you want.
  5. Ask for a draft In a Cline task, ask for a post about your change. Approve the tool call in Cline, then approve the post in SocialHandoff.

    "social": {
      "type": "streamableHttp",
      "url": "https://app.socialhandoff.com/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_AGENT_KEY"
      },
      "disabled": false,
      "autoApprove": []
    }
  }

Two gates, on purpose

Cline shows every tool call and waits for you to allow it, unless the tool is on the autoApprove list. That is the first gate. SocialHandoff adds the second: whatever Cline drafts lands in the approval inbox, where you or a teammate approve, edit, or reject it. The two gates cover different risks. Cline's prompt protects against the agent calling the wrong tool. The inbox protects against the right tool producing the wrong post.

A sensible autoApprove list

After a few sessions, many people allow the read-only tools so Cline stops asking for them:

  • get_brand_memory
  • list_posts
  • preview_posts

Keep draft_post and schedule_post off the list. Drafting is cheap to undo, but reviewing each call keeps a looping task from filling your inbox.

Prompts for Cline

  • "Read CHANGELOG.md, then draft a 3-post X thread about version 0.9. Preview it before you finish."
  • "Draft a LinkedIn post thanking the contributors listed in this release. Use brand memory."
  • "Plan next week's Bluesky posts from the docs pages changed this month."
  • "List pending Mastodon drafts and rewrite any that lack alt text on images."

Model choice

Cline works with many model providers. Tool calling quality varies by model. If drafts come back malformed or Cline loops on a tool, try a model known for reliable tool use. The SocialHandoff guardrails will reject over-length or banned-topic drafts with a 422 either way, and the error text tells Cline what to fix.

Permissions

Draft-only first. Per-account daily limits stop runaway tasks. If you later promote Cline to auto-publish on one network, the promotion is recorded in the audit log and a single guardrail failure sends it back to draft-only.

Troubleshooting

  • Cline connects over SSE and fails: set "type": "streamableHttp" exactly.
  • Red status in the MCP panel: click the server to see the error; restart it after editing the file.
  • 401: check the header spelling and that the key was not revoked.
  • Settings file location: it lives in the extension's global storage inside your editor's user data folder; always open it from the Cline panel rather than hunting for it.

Guides for each network: Cline for X, Cline for LinkedIn, Cline for Bluesky, Cline for Mastodon, and Cline for Threads.

Frequently asked questions

What transport type does Cline need for SocialHandoff?
Use type streamableHttp with the /mcp URL. Without the type field Cline falls back to SSE, which the SocialHandoff endpoint does not use.
Should I auto-approve SocialHandoff tools in Cline?
Only the read-only ones, such as get_brand_memory, list_posts, and preview_posts. Keep draft_post and schedule_post behind Cline's confirmation.
Does Cline's approval replace the SocialHandoff inbox?
No. Cline's prompt approves the tool call. The SocialHandoff inbox approves the post itself before it publishes.
