Prompt
Read CONTRIBUTORS.md and the last 3 months of release notes in docs/releases/. Draft a LinkedIn post celebrating our 100th contributor. Thank the community, name 2 concrete improvements contributors made, and invite people to the good-first-issue label. Under 1,000 characters. Draft it for LinkedIn. How to do it
- Create the key Mint a key scoped to LinkedIn with the draft permission for VS Code.
- Configure .vscode/mcp.json Add an http server with url https://app.socialhandoff.com/mcp and an Authorization header that reads the key from an input variable.
- Start and trust Start the server from the MCP view and allow its tools in agent mode.
- Ask for the post Use agent mode with the prompt. The agent reads the files and calls draft_post for LinkedIn.
- Review Approve in the inbox, or request edits so the agent can revise.
Example draft
This week our project merged a pull request from its 100th contributor. A few things this community built in the last 3 months: A Windows installer that finally works without admin rights. Translations into 6 languages, all reviewed by native speakers. None of that was on our roadmap. People showed up and built what they needed. Thank you to everyone who opened an issue, reviewed a PR, or answered a question in discussions. If you want to be number 101, the good-first-issue label is the place to start.
Gotchas
- Maintainers often write in bullet points. LinkedIn does not render markdown lists, so short lines separated by line breaks work better than hyphens or asterisks.
- A # before a word is LinkedIn markup and gets escaped. If you want real hashtags, add them in the inbox after checking how they appear in the preview.
- Keep the key out of the committed .vscode/mcp.json by using an input variable.
- Character limit: 3,000 characters for a post. The feed shows the first few lines and hides the rest behind a see more link.
- Media per post: LinkedIn allows multi-image posts, documents, and video. SocialHandoff publishes 1 image per post.
- Alt text: Supported on images through the API's alt text field. Not available for video or documents.
- Threads: LinkedIn has no threads. If a draft has several parts, SocialHandoff joins them into one post.
Frequently asked questions
Can the project account and my personal account both get the post?
Each connected LinkedIn account is a separate channel. Scope the key to the channels it may draft for, and choose them per post.
Is there an audit trail for who approved?
Yes. The append-only audit log records the draft, the approver, and the publish, and you can verify it with the audit verify endpoint.
