Research labs, academic groups, and industry research teams publishing papers and preprints

Share research papers on social media without overstating the results

A clear thread can bring a paper to thousands of readers who would never open the PDF. SocialHandoff lets an agent draft paper threads from your abstract and figures, and an author approves every claim, so the summary never says more than the paper does.

Summarizing a paper for social media is hard to do quickly and easy to get wrong. Results get overstated, limitations disappear, and figures are posted without descriptions. Many labs also moved to Bluesky and Mastodon and now maintain three accounts by hand.

How to do it

  1. Paper in Give the agent the abstract, key figures, and limitations section in Claude Desktop, or send them through the REST API when a preprint is posted.
  2. Draft the thread The agent drafts a thread: the question, the method in one post, the main result, a limitation, and the link.
  3. Figures with alt text Each figure carries a description written for readers who cannot see it; guardrails block images without alt text.
  4. Author approval An author approves, and on Pro a second author can be required, before the thread goes out.
  5. Post where science lives Publish the thread to Bluesky, Mastodon, and X, with LinkedIn getting a single joined post.
(1/5) New preprint: do small language models memorize rare facts or reconstruct them? We tested 6 model sizes on facts seen once, 10 times, and 100 times in training.

(4/5) Limitation: we only tested English Wikipedia-derived facts. We do not know yet whether this holds for code or other languages.

Accuracy is the whole point

Research communication has a special duty: the public summary must not claim more than the evidence supports. An agent can produce a well-structured first draft quickly, but only an author can say whether "improves" should be "slightly improves in one setting." That makes author approval essential, not optional.

Setup

  1. Connect the lab's accounts. Many research communities are active on Bluesky and Mastodon; see Bluesky scheduling for thread limits.
  2. Add the MCP server to Claude Desktop or Gemini CLI for authors who draft themselves.
  3. Put the lab's name, funders' naming rules, and required disclaimers in brand memory.
  4. If you prefer, self-host on university infrastructure; it is free with no limits.

Permissions

The paper agent gets draft and schedule, so it can time threads for when the paper is live. It stays draft-only on the trust ladder. Authors approve. On Pro, multi-reviewer approvals let you require the corresponding author plus one other.

Measuring reach

Track visits to the paper page or preprint with tagged links from the UTM builder. Per-post metrics show reposts and replies where networks return them. Replies from other researchers are often the most valuable outcome: they lead to citations and collaborations.

Pitfalls

  • Dropping limitations. Require a limitation post in brand memory rules.
  • Image size. Bluesky images must be 1 MB or smaller; export figures accordingly.
  • Embargoes. Schedule to match journal embargo times, and use the kill switch if a date moves.
  • Jargon. Ask the agent to define one key term per thread so readers outside the field can follow.

Useful templates: how-to thread, myth-busting post, conference recap.

Frequently asked questions

Can we publish threads on Bluesky and Mastodon?
Yes. Both support threads with up to 4 images and alt text. Bluesky images must be 1 MB or smaller.
Can two authors be required to approve?
Multi-reviewer approvals are available on the Pro and Agency plans.
Can a lab run SocialHandoff on its own servers?
Yes. Self-hosting with Docker Compose or the all-in-one image is free with no limits.
