Create Facebook Page drafts from VS Code with Copilot

Documentation teams often own the most useful Facebook Page content: a new guide, a fixed tutorial, a webinar next week. In VS Code, Copilot agent mode can turn the Markdown you just merged into a Page post, and SocialHandoff holds it for approval. Facebook accepts text and links on their own, so a docs announcement can go out without an image, or with a screenshot added in the inbox.

Prompt

Using docs/guides/getting-started.md, write a Facebook Page post announcing the rewritten getting-started guide. Mention it now takes 10 minutes instead of 30, list 3 things it covers, and link to it. Draft for Facebook.

How to do it

  1. Connect Facebook and mint a key In https://app.socialhandoff.com, open Connections, sign in with Facebook and pick the Pages to connect; each Page becomes its own channel. Then create an agent key named VS Code scoped to Facebook with draft and schedule permission.
  2. Declare the server for Copilot Add .vscode/mcp.json with a servers entry of type http, the URL https://app.socialhandoff.com/mcp, and a password input for the key. Start the server, then switch Copilot Chat to agent mode.
  3. Attach media from the workspace VS Code calls attach_media for photos (up to 10, each with alt text) or one video: a public url, or the file as base64 data (up to 8 MB) with its mime type and alt text. Larger files go to POST https://app.socialhandoff.com/v1/media as multipart. The ids go into draft_post as mediaIds.
  4. Ask for the draft In Copilot Chat, choose Agent and give it the prompt. It reads the file and calls draft_post.
  5. Approve for the right Page The card shows which Page the post goes to. Approve on desktop or in the phone swipe stack, and it publishes to that Page at the scheduled time.

Example draft

We rewrote our getting-started guide from scratch. It now takes about 10 minutes instead of 30, and covers:

- installing on Windows, macOS, and Linux
- connecting your first data source
- sharing a dashboard with your team

Gotchas

  • A Page post can carry up to 10 photos or one video, not both. Each photo should have alt text, or the missing-alt-text guardrail flags it.
  • Copilot only calls MCP tools in agent mode. In ask or edit mode it will describe the post but never call draft_post.
  • Facebook Page tokens do not expire, but removing the app's access in Facebook disconnects the Page. Reconnect it in Connections.
Facebook
  • Where you can post: Facebook Pages only. The API does not allow posting to personal profiles or to Groups through SocialHandoff.
  • Page access: You need a role on the Page that allows creating content.
  • Photos: One photo with alt text, or up to 10 photos in one post.
  • Video: One video per post.

Frequently asked questions

Can I post to a personal Facebook profile?
No. Meta only allows API publishing to Pages. Personal profiles cannot be connected.
Why does VS Code use servers instead of mcpServers?
That is the VS Code format. Its mcp.json uses a servers key and supports inputs, so the key is prompted once and stored securely.
Do Facebook Page posts need an image?
No. A Page post can be text and a link, one or more photos (up to 10), or one video.
