A Vista Social alternative when agents, not people, write the drafts

Vista Social is a broad suite with approvals, listening, and an MCP integration. If you want a narrower tool that only governs what AI agents publish, and you can run it yourself, SocialHandoff is worth a look.

Where Vista Social is strong

  • One of the widest network lists in the category, including Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, Pinterest, Threads, and Bluesky.
  • Single-stage approval on Professional and multi-stage approval on Advanced and above.
  • An MCP integration on Advanced and above, plus AI credits on every plan.

Where teams outgrow it

  • Mastodon is not on its published network list.
  • No self-hosted edition; MCP starts on the $199 Advanced plan, according to its pricing page.
  • The entry plan is priced for teams rather than solo users.

Why teams look past Vista Social

Vista Social covers a lot: publishing to more than a dozen networks, an inbox, reviews, listening, reports, and approvals. For an agency that wants one login for everything, that breadth is the point. Teams that switch tend to say:

  • We only need the publishing gate. If an agent drafts and a person approves, a full suite can be more than the job needs.
  • We need Mastodon. Vista Social's published list includes Bluesky but not Mastodon.
  • We need it on our own servers. Vista Social is cloud only.
  • MCP sits on a higher tier. Its pricing page lists MCP on Advanced ($199 a month) and above.

When Vista Social is the better choice

Stay if you manage YouTube, Reddit, or Pinterest. SocialHandoff does not support those networks yet. It does publish to Instagram, Facebook Pages, and TikTok, though meta and TikTok require app review before SocialHandoff can post beyond test accounts, and TikTok posts stay private until TikTok audits the app. Stay if your team relies on a unified inbox, social listening, or review management. SocialHandoff has none of those. And stay if your clients expect branded reports from the same tool that publishes.

What SocialHandoff does differently

SocialHandoff does one job: it sits between AI agents and your social accounts so nothing publishes without a person saying yes, unless you have deliberately promoted that agent.

  • One key per agent. Scope each key to networks and to permissions: draft, schedule, analytics.
  • Trust ladder. New agents are draft-only. After clean approvals you can promote one to auto-publish on a specific network, by hand or by policy stored in .socialhandoff/policy.json in your repo. A guardrail failure demotes it immediately. See the trust ladder guide.
  • Guardrails for banned topics, per-network length, missing alt text, daily limits, and blocked link shorteners.
  • MCP on every plan, over stdio or streamable HTTP, including the free self-hosted edition.

Networks today are X, LinkedIn, Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads, Instagram, Facebook Pages, and TikTok. The code is open source under AGPL-3.0; read more on the open source page.

Running a pilot

Most teams trial SocialHandoff next to their existing suite rather than replacing it. Connect one or two networks, issue a draft-only key to one agent, and route its drafts through SocialHandoff for two weeks. Measure how many drafts you approve unchanged. That number tells you when the agent is ready for promotion on the trust ladder.

Other Vista Social alternatives

  • Sprout Social for enterprise listening and reporting.
  • Agorapulse for inbox-heavy community management.
  • SocialPilot for a lower entry price with client approvals.
  • Postiz for an open source scheduler with many networks.
